Cheryl Chua-reflections on ICT 17sep

Do we study just for the sake of excelling in tests and not wanting to face with the embarrasement in the presence of our peers? This question is indeed mind boggling to me and I believe that it is a question in which we should give some thoughts to since we are all living in an ever competitive society especially in SIngapore where academic excellence plays a very vital role.

I came to this conclusion after seeing so many of my classmates (i was of no exception), frantically browsing through session one slides, trying their very best to grasp and memorise whatever important information they can take in for the test to come. Personally I feel that if instructions were just to read the notes and not tested, perhaps only half of the class will make an effort to read? Why can't all of us do it for the sake of our own personal growth or learning? Is it due to the way we are being brought up and taught?

Today, we were asked this question of defining the definition of cyberwellness? To me, it means to be responsible, to be aware of the dangers and to protect oneself and other users when using the internet.

As information can be shared, sent, received so easily and freely on the net especially in the aspects of blogging, online chats, cyber gaming and social networking sites like facebook and twitter, there maybe a likelihood that users who may not have sufficient background knowledge on cyberwellness maybe at risk or danger in the cyberworld. Therefore, it is essential for internet users to be equipped with the essential skills, knowledge, possible risks when surfing the net.

I acquired a new learning tool called the linoit and I feel that it is similar to mindmesiter, just that it is in post-it forms instead of mindmaps. Linoit is a platform where anyone in the shared community can post their ideas, thoughts and views on a particular subject or topic. One of the advantages of adapting this concept is that we are able to learn and gather ideas from other disciplines and learn from one another collaboratively. However, I feel that linoit may appear to be messy and disorganised when viewed as a whole as the notes are all cluttered together and this may confuse the viewer.

What I already know?

I know that cyberwellness is to ensure that one practices responsibility when using the web.

What I want to learn?

I want to learn on how to incorporate the use of linoit when teaching art.

What I learned this week?

I learnt more about linoit and the importance of cyberwellness.

What questions do I still have?

  1. You might figure out a way to incorporate LinoIt into art, but I'd advise you not to force it. The technology use should not come first; the learning objectives, content and pedagogy should. :)

The test issue you brought up is not easy to address briefly. For now, I'd say tests can be used in good or bad ways. They can motivate and really promote meaningful learning; they can also nurture students who are only test-smart and grade-conscious. I'd rather focus on the positives and try to model behaviours to do the same.
